Two cocaine-related deaths in Saskatoon prompt police warning

Two people have died from cocaine overdoses in Saskatoon, prompting police to issue a warning.

The Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) said in a news release that potentially deadly cocaine could be circulating in Saskatchewan’s largest city.

The SPS said the major crimes section was investigating the deaths.

Police said people should not take any medication unless it has been prescribed by a doctor and dispensed by a pharmacist, and that illicit drugs can cause serious injury or even death.

Anyone who suspects someone has suffered an overdose should call 911.

of Canada Good Samaritans Rescuing Overdose Victims Act provides some legal protection and applies to anyone seeking emergency help in the event of an overdose, including anyone who experiences an overdose.

The Act protects the person who seeks help, whether they stay or leave the scene of the overdose before help arrives. The law also protects any other person present on the scene when help arrives.

Symptoms of an overdose may include, but are not limited to:

  • slow or no breathing
  • gurgling
  • panting or snoring
  • moist and fresh skin
  • blue lips or nails
  • difficulty waking up or staying awake
