The Best Heated Brushes for Every Hair Type, Tried and Tested

Nothing completes a look like a fresh, bouncy blow dry, but what can you do when you don’t have the time or inclination to make an appointment with a professional? Luckily, the best hot brushes these days can help you create the same flawless result from the comfort of your home, with technology to help even the most unskilled stylist create a blowout they can be proud of. But with so many different types — from cordless brushes to Airwrap brushes to heated brushes — it can be difficult to know where to start.

“A hot brush is a styling tool that combines the features of a hairbrush and a heated styling tool, such as a flat iron or curling iron,” explains Johan Hellstrom, CEO and owner of hair care brand Björn Axen. “It uses heat to straighten, straighten or add waves to hair. The tool’s bristles help detangle hair while the heat helps style it. It’s a great tool, especially for creating glamorous looks, both with long and short hairstyles.”

It’s also important to note that not all hot brushes are created equal. Some devices project hot hair like a regular device hair dryer and come with a round bristle brush. This means they should be used on damp hair and makes them ideal for creating sleek yet bouncy blowouts. Others, like the Dyson Airwrap come with several accessories, including a round bristle brush head and an automatic curling tong to create waves and curls. Other hot brushes simply heat up and are designed to be used on dry hair to add curls, waves and volume to the roots. To help you understand the differences, I’ve reviewed the best models below. If you’re in a hurry, here’s a quick look at the top five:

What is the best way to use a hot brush?

Hellstrom advises starting by making sure your hair is dry or slightly damp, depending on the type of hot brush you’re using. “Most hot brushes are designed to be used on dry or 80 percent dry hair,” he says. “If your hair is too wet, it won’t be styled effectively.” Then part your hair to make styling more manageable and divide your hair into small sections. “This will help the hot brush glide easily and distribute heat evenly,” advises Hellstrom.

Then apply thermal protection. “Before starting to use the tool, always apply heat protection to prevent damage from high temperatures. Adjust the heat setting on the tool (if possible) and choose a temperature suitable for your hair type,” he continues.

Hellstrom then advises sliding the hot brush through your hair, from root to tip. “When using, be careful not to rush the process, let the heat penetrate and smooth the strands,” he says. “You can use the hot brush to straighten the hair or add waves by twisting the brush at the ends. Secure the curl with a hair clip and let it cool for longer lasting curls.
