Brownes comes so close to Derby

Emma-Lee Browne noted she was looking forward to next year’s spring carnival after Scary finished second in Saturday’s Victoria Derby at Flemington.

Indeed, since Browne and her husband David moved to Melbourne from New Zealand, they finished third in last year’s VRC Oaks with Basilinna and now sit second in a Victoria Derby.

“I can’t wait for next year. A third and now a second. We can do a big one next year because we’re going in the right direction,” Browne joked after Scary’s race.

“I lost my voice a bit. I’m so proud of him. We were a bit worried after Caulfield, but David knows a New Zealand practice player and he put the work in.”

Browne said she trained Leica Guv to win the 2001 New Zealand Derby, although it was under her father Jeff McVean’s name, because she was in the process of obtaining her license.

She said Scary was bred and owned by Queensland connections and she would love to repay them with a Queensland Derby.

Matt Cumani was also delighted with Kingofwallstreet’s third place in the race and said after the race that he would prepare him for the ATC Derby, which was won by his father Dundeel.

“He was fantastic. I was worried we might have a bit of bad luck, but it was a great race from Mick Dee. He used a bit of fuel, but it was worth it,” said Cumani said.

“He looked like he had a chance to win and then had to fight back to finish third. It was a courageous effort.”
