Texas high school student fatally stabbed in bathroom with kitchen knife, records show

What started as a fight in the boys’ bathroom at Manor High School in Texas turned into a a fatal stab woundnewly released court records show.

KEY obtained the arrest affidavit for Mac Brown Mbah Mbanwei, an 18-year-old student, who was charged with first-degree murder for the death of Darrin Loving, another 18-year-old student.

According to court records, a school resource officer was patrolling during the lunch period at the school when he heard several students yelling that Mbanwei had a knife. The officer alleged that he looked toward the toilet and found Mbanwei nearby with his hands in his pockets.

The resource officer, identified in documents only as “SRO Williams,” told Mbwanwi to remove his hands from his pockets, but Mbanwei did not obey the officer. At that point, Williams attempted to forcibly remove Mbanwei’s hands from his pockets, “resulting in a struggle,” the affidavit states.

When Williams finally took Mbanwei’s hands out of his pockets, the affidavit states, the student had a “kitchen knife” in his hand, which Williams took away before arresting him.

At that point, Williams returned to the lunch room, where he found Loving with multiple stab wounds and “bleeding.” Austin Travis County Emergency Medical Services provided treatment to Loving, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The affidavit said several students saw the stabbing and identified Mbanwei as the suspect. He also noted that surveillance video showed Mbanwei and Loving leaving the toilet before the “incident” took place.

“Blood spatter at the scene indicates the altercation began in the boy’s bathroom and moved to the hallway near the dining room,” the affidavit states.

The affidavit also reports that the Manor Police Department detective who wrote the affidavit attempted to read Mbanwei his Miranda rights, but Mbanwei “refused to speak at all.”
