Notable weather statistics after a hot, dry month

SAGINAW, Mich. (WNEM) – Even if October 2024 was not THE the driest or hottest on record, the weather conditions that prevailed throughout the month were still remarkable enough to make the record books! The month was generally warmer and it also didn’t rain much overall. We also saw the drought officially extending across the entire region during the month.

For weather statistics and records, Saginaw’s numbers come from MBS Airport while Flint’s numbers come from Bishop Airport. Saginaw’s records date back to January 1912 while Flint’s records date back to January 1921.

Precipitation

One thing that seemed to be lacking for much of the month was rain. For Saginaw and Flint, only Seven days recorded 0.01″ or more precipitation. The precipitation totals are as follows:

  • Saginaw: 1.50″
  • Flint: 1.22″

Saginaw’s total was outside the top 20 for driest Octobers on record, but Flint fell into the top 20. Flint now officially had its 16th driest October recorded. The record that previously held this place was 1.23″ in 1953.

Temperatures

Although the month wasn’t particularly warm, it was still above average and warm enough to crack the top 20 for Saginaw and Flint. Most of the month also saw days where the high temperature was above normal. In fact, Flint experienced 25 out of 31 days with an above-average high temperature and in Saginaw that number was 27 days.

The average temperature for the whole month is as follows:

  • Saginaw: 55.3 degrees F
  • Flint: 54.1 degrees F

In Saginaw, this average temperature is good enough to set the new 9th warmest October recorded. It broke 55.2 degrees F in 1956.

In Flint, this average is good enough to define the new 15th warmest October recorded. It exceeded 54.0 degrees F in 1984.

Saginaw and Flint set new temperature records on October 29-30. These new records are as follows:

  • Saginaw: 29 – 77 degrees F | 30th – 78 degrees F
  • Flint: 29 – 78 degrees F | 30th – 78 degrees F
