Fraud alert: Caller claiming to be from police asking for donations in Eastern Ontario

The Ontario Provincial Police are warning of a scammer asking for money over the phone while pretending to be affiliated with the police.

Police say they received calls in the Long Sault area reporting that an individual was calling to raise money for underprivileged families, while claiming to be part of a police force, without naming which one.

Officers say that to their knowledge, no police department has called residents to raise funds in the area.

“The individual spoke English very clearly, without an accent. The person hangs up when called or receives a ‘no’,” warned the Provincial Police on X.

Although police support local food banks every year, they do not call residents to ask for donations, OPP adds.

Residents are urged to report such calls to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
