Senator Lee to ‘referee’ forum with Republican Senate leadership candidates before formal vote

Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, is hosting a candidates’ forum for the leading contenders for Senate GOP leadership on the evening of Nov. 12.

The leadership election will take place the following day.

“I will chair the meeting solely to ensure that each senator has equal time to engage in conversation and manage the order of presentations and questions,” the senator announced in a letter Friday.

“As the moderator of the meeting, I will not ask any questions or participate in the conversation,” he added.

Candidates who could succeed longtime Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., are Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, John Thune of South Dakota and Rick Scott of Florida.

“Each of the current candidates has agreed to participate, and if another candidate emerges, they will have the same opportunity,” Lee wrote in the letter to his colleagues.
