Raiders coach reveals biggest challenge the offense has faced

It’s almost always difficult for an offensive coordinator in their first season with a team. They learn their new players while implementing a new offense. Many other factors add to the challenges offensive coordinators face in their first season on a new team.

That was the case for Raiders offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, who was handed the keys to the offense during the offseason but has since faced numerous obstacles.

Through eight games, the Raiders have the 10th fewest yards in the National Football League and the fifth fewest yards per game. The Raiders offense has the second-fewest yards and second-fewest yards per attempt of any team in the league this season. They also lead the league in turnovers.

The Raiders offense has struggled this season by almost every critical metric. The unit’s poor play has directly led to multiple losses this season, just like last season. However, the Raiders offense has faced far more issues than last season.

Getsy lost its top receiver after just three games, along with a new offensive coordinator, a new scheme and new faces at every level. The Raiders had inconsistency along the offensive line and at cornerback. Added to this are numerous injuries at critical positions.

“Well, I think every time you’re in this league, it’s a challenge.” Getsy said. “You have great players on every team, so every down, every first down, every touchdown is hard to get. I think it’s no different this year than any other year. I think we’re in a new system, new players, first time head coach, we are all working together to turn things around, to move things in the same direction.”

“It’s a process that continues to improve, the communication on game day, the way we practice and the expectations every day and on game day. And all of that, I think, continues to improve, and I think that’s the challenge whenever you’re a new operation, you have a lot of things to sort out, and I see that we’re getting better every week as we go through these processes.”

Getsy deserves a fair share of blame for the Raiders’ offensive woes this season. There have been several games where his questionable play cost the Raiders a win, including two goal-line failures in the last two weeks where the Raiders failed to score. Still, it must be acknowledged that there are plenty of other reasons the Raiders have struggled this season besides Getsy. Many of the Raiders’ problems on the offensive side of the ball existed long before Getsy or Antonio Pierce arrived.
