Colorado man convicted of trying to convince minor to engage in illegal sexual activity

LARAMIE, Wyo. (KJCT) – A Denver man tried to convince a 13-year-old to engage in illegal sexual activity.

Gabriel Estrada was convicted of attempting to “induce a minor to engage in illegal sexual activity,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Wyoming said. The trial lasted four days.

Evidence showed Estrada used a chat app to meet an underage girl for sexual purposes. In reality, he was talking to an undercover agent posing as a 13-year-old girl from Laramie.

Estrada messaged the 13-year-old character asking if she would have sex with him and asked if she had any friends who would like to join them in the sexual relationship. He also asked her about her sexual experience.

Estrada drove the two hours from Colorado to Laramie after confirming the minor would engage in further sexual acts with him. He went to the place he thought was the minor’s home. He had other physical evidence demonstrating his intention to engage in sexual acts with the minor. He also had an iPhone on which he texted the 13-year-old character.

Estrada testified that he made the decision to drive from his Denver apartment to Laramie, even after the minor told him her age. He said he didn’t believe she was actually 13.

His sentencing was set for January 13. Estrada faces 10 years to life in prison, up to a $250,000 fine, and five years to life supervised release.
