Leftover pumpkins attract wildlife after Halloween

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Wild animals eat just about anything they get their hands or paws on. It’s up to us to make sure they don’t eat what they shouldn’t.

Not only are pumpkins delicious, they are the most used Halloween decoration. While they’re great to look at, for the animals, it’s a free meal on your porch.

“You’ll continue to have nocturnal animals as long as they’re out there,” said Hubert Parker, director of development at Tucson Wildlife Center.

It’s not just decorations for people to keep their eyes on.

“Don’t leave the candy out, pick up the wrappers. Any animal can swallow them and it will harm them.

There are also things you can do to keep wildlife safe, and it’s as simple as staying on marked sidewalks and roads.

“Don’t cut corners in the yards because our nocturnal animals are there. There are a lot of people on the streets which they are not used to and they can be scared, so be careful at night of our nocturnal animals.

Fortunately, it’s usually the center’s low season, and they prepare for other items like their profit.

Parker says, though, that besides keeping an eye out for wildlife, the most important thing to do is have fun.
