Lethbridge security guard charged after bar patron punched in face

A 27-year-old security guard has been charged after an incident in which a bar patron was seriously injured.

On Oct. 26, police responded to a report that a 19-year-old man had been knocked unconscious by a security guard working at an event at a bar in the 3500 block of Mayor Magrath Drive South.

The injured man was identified, but left the bar before police arrived. He went to Chinook Regional Hospital for treatment of a head injury. He was then flown to Calgary in critical condition.

After viewing surveillance video footage, investigators believe the victim waited in line in the parking lot where he was waiting to enter the bar and was heading back toward the building when the security guard approached him , allegedly punched him in the face.

The victim then fell and his head hit the sidewalk.

On October 30, he was released from the hospital and is recovering.

The security guard was charged with one count of aggravated assault. Following a bail hearing, he was released. He is due in court on November 27.

Police are not releasing the name of the accused due to a separate investigation into allegations he was threatened following the assault.
