This week, a Quebecer was treated to a Halloween surprise that was far from scary: he won $1,000 per day for life.

Richard Plante received a call from Loto Québec on Tuesday announcing that he had won the jackpot.

He bought the ticket online and the Lanaudière retiree said he couldn’t believe it.

“It’s unbelievable…it’s impossible,” he said.

He immediately called his wife at work who told him she had become numb.

Loto Québec has paid out more than a billion dollars in prizes across the province so far this year, and Plante is the third Quebecer to win the Grande Vie top prize in 2024.

“It’s all a question of luck and Quebecers have been very lucky lately,” said Loto Quebec spokesperson Renaud Dugas.

Plante said it was up to his wife how he would spend his first $1,000 paycheck, adding that he already had everything he needed and hoped the jackpot would encourage him to take early retirement.
