Toronto mother charged with murder after fatal house fire

A 19-year-old mother has been charged with murder after her baby died in a Toronto house fire last week, police said.

Firefighters were called to the home on Trethewey Drive, just north of Eglinton Avenue, shortly after 1 a.m. on October 25.

Police said the 19-year-old woman and her four-month-old daughter were removed from the residence. Footage from the scene showed smoke billowing from the house as firefighters climbed onto the roof.

Toronto firefighters said several occupants of the home were already outside when they arrived.

Officers said the baby was rushed to the hospital without vital signs and died at the hospital.

The mother, they add, was sent to hospital with serious injuries. Toronto Paramedic Services said it assessed four other patients at the scene.

THURSDAY, Toronto Police identified the accused as Toronto resident Kathrynn Quita Batugal, who also faces an arson charge. A TPS spokesperson confirmed that Batugal was the baby’s mother. The accusations have not been tested in court.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact them or Crime Stoppers anonymously.

This is breaking news. More to come…
