When it comes to Halloween decorations, one Vancouver resident loves to push the boundaries.

Laryssa Gervan chooses a theme each year and puts a comedic twist on current issues.

In this spooky season, Gervan’s house on Victoria Drive has been transformed into “Vancouver City Hell” and the front yard is full of local references to sigh, then laugh about.

“I like choosing themes like this because it brings a little levity to things that are actually very serious,” she told CTV News. “You’ll definitely have a little more freedom this Halloween.”

The grisly display includes Vancouver Mayor “Ken Sin” decapitating the park’s sign – a stuffed Eeyore wearing a PB t-shirt – with a letter opener.

She also pokes fun at the signs erected outside Lululemon founder Chip Wilson’s mansion during the provincial election campaign, with a Halloween twist.

Held by a Halloween pumpkin wearing a Lululemon shirt, the sign reads “Trick or treaters seem to forget that when people ‘give’ them candy, they are participating in the evils of ‘communism’.”

There’s also a collapsed crane, a “Ghoul Chilling Park” sign and a row of tombstones for iconic nightclubs and concert halls that have closed over the years.

“I really appreciate the response from the neighbors who come,” Gervan said. “People have a lot of feelings and they laugh about it. »
