“If you report a pothole on one of our busy main roads, we will send someone to fill and make it safe within 24 hours,” it reads.

“For all other paved roads, we will be there within five days.”

AT has filled more than 3,600 potholes across its road network so far this year.

The authority manages around 7,000 km of sealed roads and more than 1,000 km of these roads see an average of 10,000 vehicle movements per day, according to figures published on its website.

“These are our high-traffic arteries. Our promise is to repair 95% of potholes on these roads within 24 hours of notification.

Transport Minister Simeon Brown announced a dedicated pothole prevention fund earlier this year; with up to $3.9 billion dedicated to road maintenance and upgrades.

Potholes occur when water enters the underlying roadway through cracks in the road surface.

To what extent is the amount of precipitation a factor?

Auckland Transport spokesman Alan Wallace said they had received an increased level of funding for road maintenance from the New Zealand Transport Agency and Auckland Council.

“This will allow us to halt the deterioration of the road network and improve service levels for everyone who uses our roads. »

Wallace, AT’s group manager for road asset maintenance and renewal, said roads in New Zealand were mainly made of granular surfacing with a thin layer of bitumen to keep water out.

“Our relatively high rainfall means they are vulnerable to caving if the road surface is not impervious. »

That’s why officials periodically resurface roads — the best time to do so is before they start to appear, he said.
