Group will visit polling places in hopes of restoring West Dayton Hospital

DAYTON, OhioWDTN) — A group is continuing its efforts to bring a hospital back to west Dayton.

The Clergy Community Coalition announced Wednesday that the group will once again attempt to give voters a say in whether a hospital should be built in west Dayton. The area has not had a hospital since Premier Health closed Good Samaritan Hospital in 2018.

A previous petition failed to gather enough valid signatures to place an initiative on the Nov. 5 ballot. The coalition will visit polling stations to collect signatures for the upcoming elections.

Bishop Richard Cox, president of the CCC, said bringing a hospital back to the community would be beneficial to west Dayton residents.

“A public hospital – it’s good for poor people, those who are underserved, those who need emergency care,” Cox said. “A hospital that ensures transparency, a hospital that ensures economic stability by creating jobs in the city. »

Ohio law allows cities to impose a maximum of one property tax mile and use the revenue for a public hospital, which would raise $2 million a year for 10 years.

The law is intended for core funding while a community seeks investment from stakeholders.
