Predicted line-ups for Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester City: Carabao Cup

If Tottenham Hotspur are to qualify for the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, Spurs must first defeat the reigning English champions.

After a disappointing defeat against Crystal Palace on weekends, Tottenham badly needs to bounce back. Before Spurs return Premier League action, however, they host Manchester City in the Carabao Cup. Ange Postecoglou’s side had to show some late heroics in their third round match against Coventry City, and a similar performance is unlikely to be enough to topple the Citizens.

Tottenham will once again be without their captain in Wednesday’s match as Son Heung-min will take care of the thigh injury this prevented him from playing against Palace and AZ Alkmaar. Wilson Odobert is also unavailable after suffering a setback during his recent recovery from a hamstring injury. Djed Spence remains doubtful due to groin strain.

Spurs’ injuries combined with their lackluster performance this weekend will likely prompt Postecoglou to make considerable changes to his XI.

Here’s what Tottenham’s lineup could look like against Pep Guardiola’s side.

GK: Guglielmo Vicario—Vicario is Postecoglou’s best option between the positions. Fraser Forster would usually get the nod in a domestic cup match, but Spurs need their best against City.

RB: Pedro Porro—The Spaniard performs well against Matheus Nunes, who has just lost the most duels for City against Southampton. Archie Gray, 18, could also feature if Porro comes off the bench.

CB: Radu Drăguşin—The central defender will only make his fifth start of the season if Postecoglou rotates his back line.

CB: Micky van de Ven—The defender’s pace will be essential against the Citizens’ dazzling attack. Cristian Romero could also get the nod, but Van de Ven makes more sense alongside Drăgușin.

GM: Ben Davies—After four straight starts, Destiny Udogie will likely be rested ahead of Tottenham’s clash with Villa Aston on the weekend, leaving the door open for Davies.

CM: Rodrigo Bentancur—Bentancur only played three minutes plus stoppage time in Tottenham’s loss to Palace, so expect the midfielder to get the nod on Wednesday.

CM: Pape Matar Sarr—The midfielder has impressed with his inconsistent appearances for Tottenham. HI’s defensive prowess will be a welcome addition to the XI against one of the best teams in Europe.

CM: Lucas Bergvall—After a poor performance from Tottenham’s three starting midfielders on Sunday, Bergvall, 18, could find himself in the middle of the park to give Spurs a spark. If Postecoglou opts for experience, expect James Maddison.

AD: Brennan Johnson— Johnson enters the game with six goals in just nine starts this season.

ST: Dominique Solanke—Richarlison is in contention for a place in Postecoglou’s XI, but the coach will want his best striker to lead the line in such an important match.

AG: Timo Werner— Without Son available, Werner has another chance to start this season.
