Scotland women’s football team ready to finish the job for UEFA Euro 2025

The Scots entered Tuesday’s UEFA Euro 2025 qualifier against Hungary with confidence and probably a little nervousness too. This is understandable on both counts. A successful campaign so far has seen them win their Nations League B going undefeated and conceding just one goal.

This took them to the first round of the Euro 2025 qualifiers. single goal victory last week in Hungary they stayed the course, but it wasn’t as convincing a performance as the players and fans would have hoped. Now, for the second leg on Tuesday evening at Easter Road, Edinburgh, could the Scots continue their momentum?

It was an exciting but still hesitant start to the match. Scotland took the lead after 19 minutes, although it was thanks to a Hungary own goal. Scotland progressed in the match as a deflected shot from Erin Cuthbert in the 31st minute gave them a 2–0 lead before half-time.

It was a more assured performance in the second half. Scotland increased their lead through Caroline Weir after 51 minutes, making it 3-0 and that Hungary goal surely ensured safety from now on. Any remaining doubts disappeared when Martha Thomas scored Scotland’s fourth goal 65 minutes from time.

In the end, a resounding result, another clean sheet and a 5-0 aggregate victory. The Scots have regained confidence in their abilities and have taken another big step forward in their quest to qualify for next summer’s tournament.

There’s only one round left to play and it won’t be easy. They will face Finland in two matches, the first on November 29 in Scotland. The return match in Finland will take place a few days later.

Finland also had an impressive result in their qualifier against Montenegro, winning 6-0 on aggregate. They are also the last team to beat Scotland, a victory on penalties earlier this year in the Pinatar Cup. Scotland have faced the Finns four times, winning just one.

One of those defeats came in the Euro 2021 qualifiers. Scotland appear to be in better form now and will want to take their team and fans to the final of a major tournament. This won’t be an easy task, but this time they seem in a better position to finish the job.
