Drag queens run for ‘freedom and democracy’ in high-heel race in Washington

STORY:: LGBTQ Runners Participate in Annual High Heel Run in Washington DC

:: Political costumes were popular in the run-up to a very tense election.

:: October 29, 2024

:: Washington, DC

“We don’t need a bunch of old white guys in Congress telling women what they need, so… telling women what to do with their bodies. We support women, their own bodies and their own choice. One hundred percent. Come on, Kamala!”

“Freedom. We can’t go back, as she says, we don’t want the ‘Orange Menace’ near Washington, DC, to get licenses in court. Fine. We’re done with that. We’re done with that.

“Any time LGBTQ people come together, it will always be political and important for us to show our strength, our love, our joy. And especially important this year. I think for a lot of people, the trans community is under relentless attack by others on the political side. And it’s just shameful and sad, so as much support as we can show together as a community, it just means the world.

Local drag queens and people dressed up for Halloween attended the race on 17th Street in the US capital. Among the attendees was a group of people dressed as “childless cat ladies,” referencing Trump’s running mate JD Vance’s 2021 comments in which he said he didn’t want the country to be run by “cat ladies without children”.

Other attendees wore colorful dresses with banners reading “Inaugural Ball, President Kamala Harris, January 20, 2025” and sported a giant Harris-Walz camouflage hat costume.

According to organizers, at least 150 people registered for the race, which was preceded by a costume contest and drag shows.”
