More than 350 local sophomores explore the careers Lauderdale County has to offer

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) – Figuring out what to do in life after high school isn’t something that’s easy to figure out.

On Tuesday, second grade students from the Lauderdale County School District and Meridian Public School District were able to come face to face with local employers.

Students were asked questions of businesses in hopes of generating interest in a job field represented in their community. One student says the military might be something he would consider because of everything it offers.

“I learned so much, like I learned there was a lady there. She was talking about her career in the Navy and how that could fully fund your college education, which I’m really studying because I want to go to college, and I’m not always entirely sure how which I will study. I’m going to do this or what school I’m going to go to. And it really gives me a clear perspective on what I want. Deal with the rest of my life,” said Micha Murray, a sophomore at West Lauderdale.

The EMBDC says this is a great way to retain talent in Lauderdale County.

“So basically, after working with the counselors last year in Lauderdale County Schools and city schools, they said, hey, 10th grade is kind of left out. So we decided to organize a career day for all Year 10 students, a bit of a speed networking type deal. They thus acquire direct experience with professionals. I mean, we encourage everyone to go to college. You can move, but we’d be happy to. You know, I would like to see you again and let you know that there are great jobs here in Lauderdale County,” said Matt Schanrock, Director of EMBDC Meridian Main Street.

There were more than 350 students at the career fair hosted by the East Mississippi Business Development Corporation.
