NEW YORK – To extend their season another day, the New York Yankees needed that big hit that had eluded them in the first three games of the World Series. They were on the brink of elimination Tuesday night in Game 4 at Yankee Stadium.

Anthony Volpe won a grand slam in the third set, Austin Wells added a solo shot three ends later and Gleyber Torres put the finishing touches on an 11-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers with a three-run homer in the eighth inning as the Yankees avoided elimination for at least one night.

Volpe’s game-breaking blast came on a slider on the first pitch of Daniel Hudsonthe second reliever deployed by the Dodgers for their scheduled day in the bullpen, with two outs and Los Angeles leading 2-1. The grand slam, which landed a few rows beyond the wall in left field, electrified a sold-out crowd that was on edge after Freddie FreemanThe two-run home run in the first inning.

It was Volpe’s first career grand slam and the first by a Yankee since Tino Martinez in Game 1 of the 1998 World Series against the San Diego Padres. Volpe, at 23 years and 184 days, became the youngest Yankee to hit a grand slam in the World Series since Mickey Mantle in 1953.

“I was hustling,” Volpe said. “I didn’t know I got it. And then I blacked out.”

It was not a promising start for the Yankees. Freeman’s home run – a laser on the short porch in right field from the start Luis Gil which extended the first baseman’s World Series home run streak to a record six games – immediately deflated the crowd. That put the Yankees, who hadn’t led since Freeman’s grand slam in Game 1, in an early hole for the third straight game. But the Dodgers’ bullpen carousel couldn’t hold off the Yankees.

“I don’t think anyone expected these guys to fold,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “We had a couple at-bats that I thought could have been better, but we knew it was a bullpen game. As far as results go, having six guys in your bullpen that feel good and rested, I feel good about it.”

Meanwhile, five Yankees relievers were held scoreless over the final five innings of the game. Tim Hill, Clay Holmes, Mark Leiter Jr.., Luke Weaver And Tim Mayza held the Dodgers hitless after the fifth inning. This was the formula the Yankees were looking for in this series. It saved their season on Tuesday.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said, “Good night for us and we’ll have another opportunity tomorrow.”
