Calgary transit safety regulations under debate

The municipal administration recommends that council vote on seven amendments to the public transportation bylaw and make them effective immediately on Tuesday.

The aim is to improve user safety and support the physical and mental well-being of public transport operators.

“Calgary Transit employs more than 2,500 operators. To date, administration has heard from more than 800 operators that personal safety is a major concern in their daily work lives,” says a report submitted to council.

“Behaviors experienced by operators include harassment, open drug use, unpredictable behavior and social disorder, and these behaviors can also impact other transit employees. »

The updates to the regulation hope to combat behavior related to loitering, use of public transport outside the destination and fare abuse.

The adjustments will also address harassment and threats against operators and passengers.

If these proposed changes pass, riders will be allowed to bring bikes on CTrains 24 hours a day.

Currently, bicycles are not permitted during peak hours.
