Ten Hag’s ‘explosive new destination’ discussed after threatening to ‘resign’

Erik ten Hag could be set to land another top job in European football after Man Utd sacked him on Monday, according to reports.

The Dutchman got off to a strong start at Old Trafford in his first season at the club, leading them to a Premier League top four finish, League Cup glory and an FA Cup final.

His second season ultimately ended in triumph with an FA Cup final victory against arch-rivals Man City but that does not hide a terrible eighth place in the Premier League.

Ten Hag survived the summer, during which there were widespread reports of possible layoffs, but INEOS chose to stand by him ahead of this campaign.

But everything went wrong at the start of the 2024/25 season with Man Utd currently 14th in the Premier League having won just three of their first nine matches.

Their latest defeat came at West Ham at the weekend, with the Man Utd hierarchy making the decision on Monday morning to go in a different direction.

Although their performances haven’t been good enough in the Premier League, Ten Hag managed to win two trophies during his tenure and he will have no shortage of options to return to management.

And now, reports in Spain claim that Ten Hag could make an “explosive” return to the bench and that Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund could be his “new destination”.

It is understood that “Ten Hag’s career may not be on hold for long, as Borussia Dortmund are monitoring his profile with interest and considering him as a possible replacement for Nuri Sahin, the German club’s current manager.”

Former Man Utd striker Louis Saha believes Ten Hag didn’t help himself in press conferences towards the end of his time at Old Trafford and he would like to see former Barcelona boss Xavi take the relay.

Saha said Betfred: “He definitely has the profile of someone who understands everything about football and I think no one can doubt that he can bring a bit of that Barcelona style in one way or another. He has had some success during his time at Barcelona, so that could be exciting to see.

“I was never going to call for Erik to be fired, but there came a time when we needed to see improvement. He was under a lot of pressure and I’m sure there are some fantastic names on the shortlist to replace him. It was a difficult situation and the results, and sometimes his press conferences, didn’t help. Sometimes he would make excuses, but they weren’t always convincing, so it was frustrating.
