Calgary Weather: Unusual late-season severe storm hits Alberta

A rare late-season severe thunderstorm occurred in central Alberta Monday evening, triggering a warning from Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Hail, heavy rain and strong winds were all cited in the national weather agency’s warning.

The temperature dictated the nature of the precipitation. Rain quickly changed to snow north of the initial front.

The impacts of this late-season storm were still evident Tuesday morning.

Early Tuesday, light and scattered mixed precipitation continued in the Calgary area and, as of 7 a.m., visibility was slightly compromised in the Calgary-Lethbridge corridor.

Sunshine will replace clouds throughout the day Tuesday, but a cooler air mass will keep daytime maximum temperatures in southern Alberta a few degrees below seasonal averages.

The forecast for Halloween will be a little cooler, but with the sun during the day it will be a little warmer than room temperature.

The sun will set at 6:11 p.m. on October 31, and when the kids go outside, the temperature will be closer to 0°C.
