City of Cambridge begins 2025 budget negotiations with proposed 1.26 percent tax increase

The City of Cambridge is proposing a 1.26 percent property tax increase during the first review of the upcoming year’s budget.

Cambridge Mayor Jan Liggett presented the strong mayoral budget for 2025 on Monday evening. The plan proposes a 1.26 percent tax increase to fund more than 140 city services and introduce an infrastructure renewal tax to maintain city assets.

“This budget supports the services, programs and facilities we enjoy as a community while planning for the future and improvement of our city,” Liggett said in a news release. “We have kept taxpayers’ struggles in mind throughout this process and I am pleased to present a budget that balances community needs with considerable economic pressures.”

Starting in July 2025, stormwater costs will shift from property tax bills to water utility bills, based on runoff from individual properties, in an effort to reduce costs for residential owners, according to the city.

Major budget areas include road maintenance and winter maintenance, parks, fire services, economic development and libraries. He also highlighted a 1% infrastructure tax to maintain the city’s assets and close the current funding gap over the next ten years.

Public comments on the budget will be heard on November 7, in person and virtually.
