New York commentator kicks off CNN show after suggesting Muslim journalist is a terrorist

A New York political commentator was removed from a CNN panel in the middle of a show and banned from the network after suggesting that a Muslim journalist was a terrorist.

The stunning attack took place on the network’s “News Night with Abby Phillip” Monday evening, Oct. 28, during a heated panel discussion about former President Donald Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday. day before.

As panelists discussed inflammatory and racist comments made by speakers at the rally, progressive commentator Mehdi Hasan, who is of Indian descent and Muslim, accused conservative commentator Ryan Girdusky of calling him an anti-Semite.

“I never called you an anti-Semite,” Girdusky responded, to which Hasan said he was a supporter of the Palestinians, “so I’m used to it.”

“Well, I hope your beeper doesn’t go off,” Girdusky said, referring to an Israeli attack on the Hezbollah militant group in September in which rigged pagers exploded, killing dozens of people and injuring thousands more.

Hasan was visibly stunned by this remark. “Did you just say I should die?” he asked Girdusky.

“No, I didn’t say that,” Girdusky replied.

Phillip then chimed in, calling Girdusky’s comment “completely out of his own pocket.”

Girdusky tried to defend himself, saying he “misheard” Hasan and thought he said “Hamas.”

“Yes, I went on CNN and said I supported Hamas,” Hasan joked. “What kind of idiots do you take us for?” What a ridiculous thing to say.

The show then went commercial, after which neither Hasan nor Girdusky were at the table. Phillip addressed viewers directly, apologizing for Girdusky’s comments.

“It was completely unacceptable. There is a line that has been crossed and it is not acceptable to me. This is not acceptable to us on this network,” Phillip said.

“We want a debate. We want people who disagree with each other to talk, but when we cross the line into a complete lack of civility, that’s not going to happen here on this show.

“We can have conversations about what’s happening in this country without resorting to the lowest of the lowest rhetoric. »

CNN released the following statement in response to the incident:

“There is no place for racism or intolerance on CNN or on our airwaves. Our goal is to foster thoughtful conversations and debate, including between people who deeply disagree, to explore important issues and promote mutual understanding. But we will not allow guests to be humiliated or the line of civility to be crossed. Ryan Girdusky will not be welcome in our network.

Girdusky also addressed the incident on Monday evening, saying:

“You can stay on CNN if you falsely call all Republicans Nazis and have received money from Qatar-funded media. Apparently you can’t go on CNN if you make a joke. I’m glad America can see what CNN stands for.
