Berkeley Co. officials meet with community to discuss former St. Stephen School

ST. STEPHEN, SC (WCSC) – A Berkeley County cleanup project takes another step forward for the city of St. Stephen.

St. Stephen High School is one of several areas being evaluated in the county as part of a grant project from the Environmental Protection Agency.

$500,000 in funding from the Brownfield Grant was dedicated to assessing areas of St. Stephen, including the high school.

As part of this assessment, environmental hazards were discovered at the former St. Stephen High School, such as lead paint, mercury and asbestos. Concerns have also been raised regarding structural integrity.

The community is expected to gather Tuesday evening at St. Stephen Elementary School to provide feedback.

This meeting will take place at 1053 Russellville Road at 6 p.m.
