Car hits students at Auburn South Primary School in Melbourne’s east

A number of children have been hit by a car which crashed into the fence of a Melbourne primary school.

Emergency services were called to Auburn South Primary School in Hawthorn East on Tuesday afternoon after reports of a collision.

A Department of Education spokesperson said the children hit by the car were believed to be injured, including one seriously injured.

They said the driver of the car may have suffered a medical incident.

Ambulance Victoria and Victoria Police said emergency services were on scene and treating patients.

“Our priority at this time is our patients and we do not have any confirmed information from the scene at this early stage,” an Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said.

Guy, a local business owner, said he visited the school to offer whatever help he could.

“There were kids who were very, very scared, not themselves,” he told ABC Radio Melbourne.

He described the scene as “chaos”, with Burgess Street near the school closed to traffic.

The Education Ministry spokesperson said police were setting up roadblocks around the school, which would prevent parents trying to pick up other students.

They said it would also affect the nearby high school.
