COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – On Monday, Colorado Springs police announced this week that they will be increasing enforcement against drunk driving through Halloween.

According to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), El Paso County has historically been a leader in DUIs. In 2023, there were 1,603 drunk driving arrests in the county and 21 deaths involving an impaired driver.

“That’s really where we’re going to focus a lot of our enforcement, but not just on drunk and drugged drivers, but also on those who are speeding, particularly in areas where there are neighborhoods and residential areas where we’re going to have these passes outside and running from house to house,” said CSPD Public Information Officer Caitlin Ford.

Colorado Springs police announced they will have a dedicated drunk driving unit that will patrol the roadways to ensure those who drive are alert and are not endangering the safety of others.

“It’s simply not the risk that you’re not only putting yourself at increased risk of a road death or car accident, but also putting everyone else on the road at risk,” said Ford.

“It just means people need to step up their game and be a little more responsible when it comes to drunk driving.” Plan ahead, find a sober friend, do whatever it takes, but never get behind the wheel impaired,” said Sam Cole, CDOT safety officer.

A Colorado Springs law firm, Wilhite Law Firm, will offer reimbursement to those who use rideshare services to get home.

To get reimbursed:

• You must be 21 years and older with a valid ID
• The rideshare program will be offered exclusively through UBER or LYFT credits.
• For Halloween, this will take place from October 25 to 31
• receipts must be sent within two weeks
