Ministry of Commerce to create more AI hubs – FBC News

The Ministry of Commerce is committed to creating new AI hubs in the country, with the aim of positioning Fiji as a center of innovation and technological advancement.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, Manoa Kamikamica, highlighted that these hubs will promote research and development in the field of artificial intelligence, creating collaboration spaces allowing startups, entrepreneurs and researchers to explore new ideas and solutions.

Kamikamica also highlighted that the ministry works with partners to promote sustainable growth and improve technological innovation in various sectors.

He stressed the importance of increasing the number of computer science graduates, urging universities to strengthen their programs and schools to update their curricula to include computer science education.

“We will certainly ensure that we have adequate safeguards in place in terms of governance across the country on AI. But having said that, it’s a very exciting time to work in the IT or communications field because you can see the number of opportunities it’s going to generate for the country over the next few years.

Kamikamica also noted that the government recently partnered with KPMG to create an AI Hub, which has already created 40 jobs.

KPMG chief digital officer John Munnelly said they will bring in experts to train individuals on how to use new technologies.

“The people we have recruited for our AI development – ​​and we will need to recruit more – have a great mindset for learning. AI is new and enthusiasm for learning and innovation is essential.

This initiative aims to enable local talent to engage in cutting-edge technologies, ensuring that Fijians are well prepared to participate in the global digital economy.
