The future of CCTV in the Surrey district is resolved

A Surrey city council has agreed to support the rollout of a recording-only CCTV system in the district.

Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) said the policy was in line with residents’ views expressed during a consultation carried out in late 2023.

The consultation results suggest that CCTV is seen as a deterrent to crime and the continued provision of cameras is supported.

Councilor Keira Vyvyan-Robinson said: “Following the consultation, we are committed to investing in the continued provision of CCTV in the public realm in Mole Valley. »

The MVDC cabinet unanimously agreed to support the deployment at an October 22 meeting.

MVDC has voluntarily maintained the daily operation of Mole Valley CCTV since Surrey Police left Reigate Police Station in 2023, following the discovery of Autoclaved Reinforced Aerated Concrete (Raac) in the building.

There are currently 51 cameras in 38 locations across the district. Surrey Police are the main users of the cameras and continue to access them when required.

The council said £100,000 was provisionally allocated in the 2024/25 budget, along with annual operating costs of £40,000 to upgrade existing cameras.

They added that the next steps will see the MVDC launch a procurement exercise to increase coverage across the district.
