Brazilian soccer fan dies after ambush by rival fans

SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazilian authorities say a Cruzeiro soccer fan died Sunday morning in an ambush by rival fans in São Paulo state.

SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazilian authorities say a Cruzeiro soccer fan died Sunday morning in an ambush by rival fans in São Paulo state.

The fan’s death was confirmed at a hospital in the town of Mairipora, 46 kilometers (28 miles) north of Sao Paulo. According to local media, at least 12 supporters were injured in the same attack.

Cruzeiro fans were returning to Belo Horizonte by bus following their team’s 3-0 defeat to Athletico Paranaense in Brazil’s top-flight championship on Saturday.

Brazil’s federal traffic police told reporters the victim was a 30-year-old man, but did not provide further details. The São Paulo Public Security Secretariat said the attack was carried out by ultra supporters of rival Palmeiras.

Footage broadcast on Brazilian television showed a bus on fire and several Cruzeiro fans lying on the sidewalk as Palmeiras supporters beat them with fists and sticks.

Cruzeiro said on his social media that he “deeply regrets another incident of fan violence” in Brazil.

The club also said “several fans were injured”.

Palmeiras, based in Sao Paulo, has not yet made a comment.
