Ontario government decides to extend 5.7 cent gas tax reduction until June 2025 – CP24

TORONTO — Ontario is considering extending a 5.7-cent reduction in the provincial gas tax until next summer.

Premier Doug Ford said his government would soon introduce legislation that, if passed, would keep the tax at nine cents per liter until June 30.

The legislation would also extend the 5.3 cent discount on the price of diesel fuel.

The province first temporarily reduced tax rates on gasoline and diesel in July 2022, but has extended the reductions several times since.

Ford estimates that this series of moves will help the average Ontario household save $380 in the three years since the first reductions were introduced.

He also used the announcement of the extension to call on the federal government to eliminate the federal carbon tax, which Ford has long railed against.
