Business collapse prolongs school transfer uncertainty

Parents, students and teachers continue to face uncertainty as plans to move a school have been pushed back.

Surrey County Council is considering moving Reigate Priory Junior School to a new site within the authority’s headquarters, despite the concerns of some parents who say the existing downtown site can be upgraded.

In January, Surrey County Council submit two options for consultation people were given the choice of continuing with the Woodhatch Place resettlement plan or moving children to new schools across Reigate.

These projects have now been pushed back to the following summer the collapse of ISG Limitedconstruction and design partner of the departmental council.

Work on the planning permission application has been stopped, but the council insists the application “remains active” and the existing site cannot proceed, according to the Local democracy information service.

The authority said it would continue to work with the Department of Education despite the setback.

Additional ecological studies must also be carried out at the beginning of summer.

“We understand that this delay may be frustrating for some residents, but it is essential that we follow the necessary procedures to ensure we find the best solution,” a council statement said.

“This delay does not change the need to find a new framework for the school, adapted to the future.”

Surrey County Council expects a final decision on how to proceed to be made in early autumn 2025.

ISG Limited has been contacted for comment.
