Churchill statue barricaded as thousands of Tommy Robinson supporters march in London

Trade unionists, community groups and activists descended on the capital by coach and train for what has been described as one of the biggest anti-fascist mobilizations in decades.

The Met said static gatherings were expected at the end of both marches.

Hundreds of officers from the Metropolitan Police and British Transport Police have been joined by officers from other forces across the country to ensure the two sides remain separated.

In July, as many as 20,000 Robinson supporters staged a march in central London, with allegations of Islamophobic and racist chanting among the crowd.

Robinson was a member of the far-right British National Party and founded the English Defense League.
