Govia Thameslink Railway launches apprentice recruitment drive

A railway company has launched a recruitment campaign to hire new apprentice engineers.

Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), which operates Thameslink, Great Northern, Southern and Gatwick Express, has said it wants to recruit staff and train them to maintain its fleet of trains.

The course is a blend of practical and theoretical learning, leading to a UK recognized professional qualification.

Anyone over the age of 16 can apply, but they must have a minimum GCSE level 4 (grade C) in Maths, English and Science to be eligible for the role.

Katie Short joined GTR in 2023 and says she hopes to qualify as a Level 1 Service Engineer.

The 22-year-old said: “I’ve always loved hands-on, hands-on jobs, so I wanted to take that passion and apply it to an industry where I could create a long-lasting career.

“I wanted to make a difference and be part of a team that helps keep our trains safe. So I applied for the apprenticeship and haven’t looked back since.”

Cameron Wytiahlowsky, Engineering Apprentice Trainer Assessor at GTR, said: “We are looking to recruit the next generation of engineers ready to take their first steps on the career ladder.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to earn a real salary, whilst learning the trade.”

Applicants must be able to travel to East Surrey College and various locations across the GTR network for work, the rail company said.
