St. Michael Catholic High School: Charges laid in connection with threats

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say a 14-year-old boy from Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, faces several charges in connection with threats made against a Catholic high school in eastern Ontario .

Anonymous telephone threats of violence were made against St. Michael Catholic Secondary School in Kemptville, Ontario. between September 12 and October 17. The threats forced the school to close on several occasions. Following threats made on October 3 against St. Michael Catholic Secondary School, all public and Catholic schools in Kemptville were closed for the day.

A school near Iroquois, Ontario. was also threatened that day, but the OPP said the investigation into that incident is ongoing.

The accused, who cannot be identified under Youth Criminal Justice Actwas arrested Friday following a search of a home and school in Bridgewater. Police also seized several electronic devices, according to a news release.

The youth is charged with uttering threats of death or bodily harm, indecent communications, mischief by interfering with the lawful use, enjoyment or exploitation of property worth more than $5,000 , public mischief and unauthorized use of a computer by destroying data.

The accused remains in custody following a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear by video in the Ontario Court of Justice in Brockville on Tuesday.

Several police forces, including the RCMP and Bridgewater police, participated in the investigation. The OPP said the FBI in the United States is now also involved.

“Although charges have been filed, the investigation continues, in collaboration with police in several jurisdictions, as well as the United States Federal Bureau of Investigations. The OPP also continues to examine potential links to similar incidents, including a threat. against an Iroquois school,” a statement said.
