Ottawa police say a Montreal man has been charged with first-degree murder for stabbing a woman Thursday in front of two of her children. Fsha Tekhle, 36, was charged today with the murder of Brkti Berhe, 36, in a park near Uplands Drive in south Ottawa in what police say was a femicide. Berhe was married with four children and police say Tekhle had a domestic relationship with one of her family members. Witnesses to the stabbing attempted to help Berhe and her young children and gave police a detailed description of the suspect and his vehicle. Authorities believe Tekhle was returning to Montreal when he was stopped by Ottawa police on Highway 417, near the exit for Casselman, Ontario. Deputy Police Chief Trish Ferguson said Berhe’s death was femicide, a term city police describe as the “misogynistic murder of women and girls based on their gender, committed overwhelmingly by men.” This report by The Canadian Press was first published October 25, 2024.8
