Government plans to use artificial intelligence to monitor traffic violations: Nitin Gadkari

The government plans to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other innovative methods to monitor traffic violations and ensure proper implementation of penalties, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced on Thursday. Speaking at the 12th Traffic InfraTech Expo, he detailed plans to improve fare collection systems, including researching satellite charging systems to increase efficiency and transparency.

Gadkari emphasized that road safety requires advanced engineering solutions, stringent law enforcement and adoption of technologies such as artificial intelligence. He announced that the government will appoint private sector experts to develop technological solutions for road safety.

Gadkari stated that a special committee of experts will evaluate proposals from startups and industry leaders to implement the best ideas. The committee is expected to complete its assessments within three months to facilitate rapid recovery in the sector.

The Minister underlined the government’s commitment to high quality standards in surveillance technology, assuring that quality will not be compromised regardless of the size of the company. By emphasizing cost-effectiveness and fair profit margins, he encouraged small firms with innovative solutions to participate in government tenders.

Gadkari called on all stakeholders, including the government, private sector and startups, to find solutions to India’s pressing road safety challenges. He cited the alarming statistics of road accidents, which result in nearly 5 lakh accidents annually and a large number of deaths, especially among the 18-36 age group.

He said the economic impact of road accidents is estimated to be 3 percent of the country’s GDP. Improving road safety is a government priority and measures are being implemented to combat this problem.
