Pittsburgh Steelers have a future star in their highly athletic rookie linebacker

PITTSBURGH– The Pittsburgh Steelers have been drafting defensive superstars for years, and linebacker has historically been a well-drafted position. But inside linebacker has continued to be an issue since Ryan Shazier’s career-ending injury. But, Payton Wilson He wants to change his hitting record from recent years at the position and elevate his game.

Wilson has had a rough start to the season, as has the entire gym. But Wilson led the team in his second start on Sunday. His speed and ability to impact games are becoming more evident with each passing week.

Wilson went out of his way to demand that coaches and teammates treat him like a veteran. Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin said that’s one of the unique traits that sets Wilson apart from most rookies.

“He brought a level of maturity to him where I wouldn’t treat him like a rookie. That’s going to fuel his growth,” Austin said. “He’s one of those guys who’s first in and last out.”

Senior Patrick Queen He saw some great linebackers throughout his years in Baltimore. He played alongside Roquan Smith and saw his own development take shape. Queen says it’s “scary” where Wilson is now in his rookie season because he has so much upside. It doesn’t surprise him that Wilson had a perfect game against the Jets.

“Not with someone like him. I think he has that talent,” Queen said. “To be able to see him do that is a big thing, but knowing that his game can get better, that’s the scary part.”

Queen believes ‘the sky’s the limit’ for Wilson. Austin wants Wilson to continue learning NFL schemes and dealing with blocks at this level. But it’s hard to deny that NC State’s product isn’t trending upward. Wilson’s innate drive for self may be what makes the difference.

“Obviously he’s still getting slower with every rep, every practice, but I’ve been thinking since camp started that I really don’t want to be seen as a rookie,” Wilson said. “I want to be held to the same standard as someone who has been here 10 years.”

As Wilson continues to get more snaps from Queen and Elandon Roberts, the Steelers see his athleticism and playmaking skills improving. The more they see, the more they believe they may have a star in their hands in the future.
