Flames, Oilers trade for late-career GM D-Man, says Scribe

For the general manager of the Calgary Flames Craig Conroycommercial defender Rasmus Andersson against the rival Edmonton Oilers would be a monumental risk – and potentially a career-defining mistake. Given the heated rivalry between the two teams, it’s not uncommon that they could trade, but any deal sending a key player like Andersson to Edmonton could result in Conroy being fired. writes Allan Mitchell.

At the very least, this trade would damage Conroy’s reputation, especially if Andersson helps the Oilers make a deep playoff run or even win a Stanley Cup. Conroy may never make it out of this and given the market that likely exists for Andersson, such a deal with the Oilers would call his job security into question.

Mitchell recently noted that Oilers general manager Stan Bowman should be looking for a veteran defenseman between now and the March trade deadline. He listed a handful of defensemen who could be a good fit for Edmonton. Among them, Andersson, Henri Jokiharju. Artem Zub, Alexandre Carrier and Justin Barron. Mitchell noted that if trade discussions focused solely on skill and gamble suitability, Andersson would be a top candidate.

Andersson currently leads the Flames in points with 10 in eight games. His two-way play, ability to handle tough minutes and physical style would add valuable depth to Edmonton’s blue line. He’s also the perfect fit for a team with Stanley Cup aspirations and his cap hit is more than affordable for most teams at $4.55 million.

The Flames could use a massive return from the Oilers

That’s not to say a trade would be impossible, but if Conroy did, any trade involving Andersson, especially with a heated rival, would demand a massive return. It would probably have to be bigger than any other team could offer. It’s unclear whether the Oilers would be willing to pay that premium.
