Maple Leafs extend D McCabe to five-year, $22.55 million deal

The Toronto Maple Leafs have re-signed defenseman Jake McCabe to a five-year contract extension worth $22.55 million.

The average annual contract value is $4.51 million.

McCabe, 31, has three assists in nine games with the Maple Leafs this season, averaging 21:09 of ice time.

McCabe revealed at training camp that discussions about an extension were underway. He is currently playing the last of a four-year, $16 million contract signed with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2021.

“We’ve talked a few times. I love being here and I think they like my game too,” McCabe said last month. “That’s what you have agents for and now it’s time for training camp, so I’m just looking forward to being with the guys and stepping up our game.”

He was traded to Toronto before the 2023 trade deadline and is now in his second full season with the club. McCabe is coming off his career-best total with eight goals and 28 points in 73 games last season. He added a goal while dressing in all seven playoff games against the Boston Bruins.

Before signing Monday, McCabe was one of three key members of the Maple Leafs who played contract years this season. Forwards John Tavares and Mitch Marner remain expected for unrestricted free agency next summer, with both also declaring their desire to re-sign this week.

A veteran of 586 career games, McCabe has 33 goals and 155 points during his career with the Buffalo Sabres, Blackhawks and Maple Leafs.
