Generally dry weather persists; highs in the 80s

BIRMINGHAM, AlabamaWBRC) – AccuTrack First Alert shows mostly clear skies across central Alabama this evening. Although a few isolated showers managed to spread through earlier today, chances of rain are now long gone. Unfortunately, places that received rain did not see enough to detract from drought conditions. Neither Birmingham nor Anniston recorded any measurable precipitation with intermittent showers, so we may still be on track to have the driest October on record for both cities.

The abnormally dry and hot weather continues for the coming week. Temperatures should ultimately be slightly cooler than last week, but we will remain above average. Our average high temperature for late October is in the 70s. I expect we will remain several degrees above average with highs in the 80s next week. Overnight lows will also remain mild and above average with temperatures in the 50s and 60s.

Next big thing: Long-range models suggest a cold front could approach Alabama by next Thursday and Friday. It’s possible we could see a few showers in northwest Alabama during Halloween evenings. I would probably plan for a mostly dry Halloween with highs in the lower 80s and partly sunny to mostly cloudy skies. Temperatures Thursday night will likely stay in the 70s for treats. We could see a few showers along and north of I-20/59 Friday afternoon with highs near 80. Mild weather will likely continue into the first weekend of November. Besides, we still don’t see any signs of significant precipitation or cooler temperatures for the first week or so of November.

Tropical Update: Although the tropics are calm at the moment, the National Hurricane Center now highlights a medium chance of an area of low pressure developing in the Caribbean late next week. If something happens, we don’t expect any problems along the Gulf Coast. Hurricane season continues through November. Normally, it is very rare for a tropical phenomenon to impact the Southeast in November. Cold fronts and areas of high pressure normally push tropical systems away from us.
