Red Wings lose lead in third, fall to Oilers in overtime

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings led in the third period Sunday, but the Edmonton Oilers continued to attack them in waves.

They tied it on Evan Bouchard’s goal in the third and won 3-2 on Leon Draisaitl’s second goal of the game 18 seconds into overtime at Little Caesars Arena.

The Red Wings (4-4-1) did well to get into overtime after being shorthanded for 1:51 late in the third period after Andrew Copp was called for tripping.

Copp had a goal and an assist, JT Compher had a goal and Patrick Kane had two assists for the Red Wings. Cam Talbot made 30 saves. The Oilers (4-4-1) outshot Detroit 32-17 after the Red Wings took a 10-1 lead midway through the first period.

Bouchard tied it at 2-2 at 10:47 of the third period with a point shot while traffic was ahead.

The Red Wings led most of the night and quickly regained the lead at 9:26 of the second period when Copp took a shot from Jeff Petry. It was his fourth goal of the season.

The Oilers had tied it at 1-1 at 8:46 when Leon Draisaitl’s central pass was caught by Olli Maatta.

The Red Wings led 1-0 after a strong first period in which they recorded 10 of the first 11 shots and outshot Edmonton 13-5.

Compher scored his third of the season at 3:28, converting a central pass from Kane.

The Red Wings host the red-hot Winnipeg Jets (8-0-0) on Wednesday (7:30 p.m., FanDuel Sports Network).
