Martintown’s Gerry Duguid, a 79-year-old veteran and former combat army diver, was recognized as an honorary veteran during the Ottawa Senators’ home opener. Branch 297 is proud to announce Duguid’s nomination for this honor, thanking Heroes Ridge and Lepine Apartments for their sponsorship and support in recognizing veterans.

Duguid, who joined the Canadian Army at the age of 15, spoke gratefully about his experience at the Senators game. “I really felt honored,” Duguid shared. “The Ottawa Senators treated me exceptionally well, from VIP parking to the suite. I was simply overwhelmed by their hospitality.

He fondly remembers his military service, which he began with the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1962. “The camaraderie and experiences I had were unforgettable. I am proud to have served in the Canadian Army and, even today, my thoughts are with the comrades I lost along the way,” he added.

Although hockey wasn’t Duguid’s strong point, he joked with a Senators representative: “I told him I scored three goals… in warm-ups!” I don’t think he expected it,” Duguid said with a laugh.

Duguid, who has lived in Martintown for nine years, stressed that this recognition was not just for him but for all those who served. “Even though it’s me, my thoughts are with those who aren’t here.”
