The Daily: Walman is part of the NHL’s ugly record; Tagus vs. Detroit

The Steve Yzerman trade that sent Jake Walman to the San Jose Sharks this summer put him on an NHL record-setting club.

And not in a good way.

The former Red Wings defenseman is a member of a Sharks team that became the first NHL team to lose nine games to start back-to-back seasons. The ninth defeat came on Saturday when the The Sharks fell 7-3 to the Vegas Golden Knights.

Walman is not part of the problem. In terms of playing time, he is the team’s number one defender (22.42 minutes per game). He is also second on the team with 25 shots on goal. His plus-minus of minus-4 is acceptable for a team that has eight players at minus-5 or worse.

The Sharks coaching staff seems to appreciate Walman’s work. He has two points for the season. The Red Wings traded Walman last summer, primarily because they needed his cap space, but also because they didn’t always like his approach to goal celebrations and his commitment to what the Red Wings were trying to accomplish.
