Broncos finish home game with 7-4 win over Thunderbirds

Brady Birnie scored his first career WHL hat-trick as the Swift Current Broncos finished their fifth home game with a 7-4 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds on Saturday night.

The Broncos were held three times in 1:53 of the first game, including two goals 25 seconds apart. 9:07 during a Broncos power play, Brady Birnie (Regina, Saskatchewan) continued to play near the Seattle net by scoring his 8th of the season from Connor Gabriel (Saskatoon, SK). Next, Sawyer Dingman (Edmonton, AB) would redirect Josh McGregor (Brandon, MB) while Adam Král (Liberec, CZE) would also contribute to the Bronco’s second goal. 1:35 later, Brady Birnie found the net for the second time in the period ahead of Clarke Caswell (Brandon, MB) and Connor Dale (St. Albert, AB), making the score 3-0 leading to a time death of Seattle. The Thunderbirds managed to get a late power play goal back with 15 seconds left in the period as Nathan Pilling scored his 11th of the season past Joey Rocha (Nanaimo, BC), cutting the Bronco lead to 3- 1.

Luke Mistelbacher (Steinbach, MB) didn’t wait long to jump into second as he scored his 9th of the season ahead of Carlin Dezainde (Calgary, AB) and Parker Rondeau (Swift Current, SK) 51 seconds behind. Mistelbacher. extends his point streak to eight games.

Seattle would follow up at 4:26 with another power play for Seattle as Matej Pekar would get enough shots past Joey Rocha to create a 4-2 deficit for Seattle. But at 18:29, Dawson Gerwing (Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan) parked in front of the Thunderbirds’ net and redirected his third of the season. Josh McGregor and Jaxen Gauchier (Peavine, AB) contributed to the goal. Gauchier would score his first point in the WHL.

In the third period, the Broncs scored again early at 1:50. Connor Gabriel (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) made it 6-2 ahead of Birnie & Mistelbacher. Seattle would then respond with two goals to tighten the score to 6-4 from Matej Pekar on the power play at 10:17 then at 11:10, Sam Charko would score his 4th of the season. But with the net empty, the Broncos would seal the deal as Brady Birinie got his hat-trick from Luke Mistelbacher and Adam Král and moved the Broncos to 8-5-0-0 on the campaign.

Next meeting for the Broncos, two road games which will begin on Wednesday, October 30 in Lethbridge.
