New pedestrian crossing on Dunkirk Drive and Fermor Avenue

A new pedestrian crossing in Winnipeg’s St. Vital neighborhood could bring major changes to both motorists and pedestrians.

The pedestrian path was unveiled on Saturday at Dunkirk Drive and Fermor Avenue. Once activated, if someone presses the button to cross, drivers traveling south on Dunkirk will have to stop at a brand new red light for the first time in nearly 60 years.

“It will probably only be activated about four times a day,” said area councilor Brian Mayes. “But it will allow people to cross safely.”

The light had been perpetually green since the 1960s, Mayes said, meaning the new light could surprise some drivers.

“We don’t talk about the crosswalk that much,” Mayes said. “We want to let people know, if you drive south, a slight change in direction here after all these decades.”

The City is also asking pedestrians and motorists to be alert to changes and to keep their eyes on the road.
