Mats Sundin, Barbie and Ken-Inspired Ice Dancing, and More

It’s been a busy week at CBC Sports, with a host of Hall of Fame athletes taking the time to chat with us in studio and on location.

Among them, Mats Sundin, member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, who spoke to us about his new book, At home and away. The former Toronto Maple Leafs captain also reflected on some of the biggest moments of his playing career:

Called into the room

Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame class of 2024 was officially inducted Wednesday and included larger-than-life athletes like Vicky Sunohara, Alex Nelson, Patrick Chan and Daniel Nestor.

We spoke with the newest members of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame before the ceremony about what it meant to be “called to the hall” and the current state of their respective sports. Here’s what Patrick Chan had to say about the honor and the current state of figure skating:

Past honorees, including Catriona Le May Doan and Randy Ferbey, spoke with us on the red carpet about how the Class of 2024 inspired change in their sport and what it means to be a part of history.

At home and away

Speaking of history, Jade Kovacevic made one last week when she became the first player to sign with the Northern Super League, Canada’s premier national women’s professional soccer league.

Kovacevic represented Canada at the U17 and U20 World Cups and will now play for AFC Toronto. She told us it was “a dream come true” to join the NSL.

Canadian Women’s National Team player Vanessa Gilles also joined us to talk about her life since ‘Dronegate’ shook the women’s Olympic team at Paris 2024, and what it was like to find the Spanish team for a friendly match:

Short track makeover

The first weekend of the Short Track World Tour is fast approaching and a new format aims to make the sport more entertaining to watch. CBC commentator Michael Gilday talked about how the change energizes both skaters and fans, and we also got a glimpse of Canadian skaters Kim Boutin and Jordan Pierre-Gilles:

Paratriathlete on top of the world, once again

We also met paratriathlete Stefan Daniel, who became world champion for the sixth time, which is a true story of redemption after he fell while cycling during the Paralympics last September.

The figure skating season is launched

Skate Canada International is taking place in Halifax this weekend, so Anastasia Bucsis and Brittany MacLean have set the stage for us:
