NFL rules on Raiders’ Tom Brady comments

Las Raiders minority owner Tom Brady was given several rules he had to follow to become an owner while also broadcasting National Football League games.

The rules were implemented to ensure that the potential conflict of interest related to holding these two positions simultaneously would be resolved.

One of the most significant restrictions placed on Brady was harsh but fair, especially considering the power that comes with calling nationally televised games.

According to Michel France from Sports Illustrated, “Brady will still have heavy restrictions limiting what he can or cannot do in the booth. Most importantly, let’s say.”

This past Sunday, Brady and Kevin Burkhardt teamed up for Fox’s broadcast of the Detroit Lions’ Week 9 game against the Green Bay Packers. Just before halftime, Lions safety Brian Branch was ejected for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Packers receiver Bo Melton.

Brady made no secret of his feelings on the play. He said he felt Branch was kicked out during a routine football game and that Branch should not have been kicked out. In explaining his feelings, Brady didn’t hesitate to criticize the call on the field.

“I don’t like that call at all,” Brady said. “I mean, obviously it’s a penalty, but for me it has to be serious intention in a game like this.”

Brady’s comments, while mild, still seemed to move in the direction of criticizing the referees, something Brady is not allowed to do. However, Sports Business Journal’s Ben Fischer recently got clarification on the matter from NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy.

“The problem would be if Tom was extremely critical of the officiating or questioned the integrity of an official or crew,” McCarthy said. “That didn’t happen in this case,” McCarthy told Fischer. Thus ending any possibility of Brady receiving any punishment for these particular comments.

While Brady may have broken a rule or two during his playing days, his comments during Sunday night’s game were mostly innocuous and probably wouldn’t have made waves if anyone other than Brady l ‘had said. As interesting as it was to see whether or not the NFL would punish Brady, they made the right decision not to.
